Relax. All you have to do is enjoy.Love grows by giving. The love we give away is the only love we keep. The only way to retain love is to give it away.
Elbert Hubbard

Sometimes it seems like business is about getting. Getting more customers. Getting more business. Getting higher margins. Getting.

That just makes sense, doesn’t it? If we don’t get those things, we’re toast. We’re done. We’re out of business.

What if instead of getting, business is about giving? What if giving equalled unimaginable getting? Richard Branson “remains obsessive about checking the little touches that make our experience unique”.  With a net worth of $4.6 Billion as of March 2013, he seems to be doing okay.

Gestures, in love, are incomparably more attractive, effective and valuable than words.
Francois Rabelais

What unique experience are you giving to your customers? Quality? Customer Service? Solutions? Are you giving what you’ve always given, or giving something unexpected? Perhaps, a surprise that’s just for them? A little something extra?

Love is that little something extra. It is the thing that clearly demonstrates insider information, secret knowledge. It shows you know someone better than anyone else. Starbucks demonstrated this once again with an ordinary sticker on the inside of their sandwich packaging.

Who buys sandwiches to go? People who didn’t make their own sandwiches. Maybe they’re tired. Maybe they’re in a hurry. Maybe their sandwiches aren’t as good. Whatever the reason, they need to have a sandwich that is already made, good to eat and ready to go. To go. On the go. Going. In a hurry. Except when you get a sandwich from Starbucks, there’s a little, secret note on the inside – just before you open your sandwich:

“Relax. All you have to do is enjoy.”

Boom! They know me! They were thinking about me, about what I needed. It’s like a little note in your lunch from your mom. I smile.

Right now, weigh how much it costs to do this, and then, how much its worth to customers. This behavior, this focus seems to be working out for Starbucks – ranked 5 in the World’s Most Admired Companies.

You never lose by loving. You always lose by holding back.
Barbara de Angelis

Go the extra mile. It doesn’t have to be a lumbering, expensive marketing campaign with unicorns and The Rockettes. Many times it’s the little things. Simply something that demonstrates – without a doubt – that you love your customers, and you have a special way of showing it.

Are your customer touch points a unique experience chock full of Love?
